DC Comic Books

DC Comics is the largest and most diverse English language publisher of comic books in the world. Founded in 1934 as National Allied Publications, the company that would one day become DC Comics virtually created the comic book, publishing the first comic of all original material. Then, in the spring of 1938, the first super hero story appeared in ACTION COMICS #1, introducing SUPERMAN.

Other soon-to-be icons would follow, including BATMAN, WONDER WOMAN, GREEN LANTERN, THE FLASH and many others. Today, DC Comics publishes more than 80 titles a month and close to 1000 issues a year. DC has several imprints spanning the gamut of graphic storytelling.

The DC Universe is the home of DC's peerless roster of super heroes; Vertigo caters to a more mature, literary readership; WildStorm offers a bold alternative take on heroic and adventure comics; CMX brings some of Japan's best-loved manga to American audiences; and Zuda Comics is DC's innovative web imprint. DC is also the home of MAD Magazine, the best-known humor magazine in America. DC Comics is a division of Time Warner, the largest entertainment company in the world.

The DC Universe
The DC Universe is home to the "World's Greatest Super Heroes," internationally recognized icons that continue to thrill generation after generation. Established in 1938 with the first appearance of SUPERMAN, the Man of Steel, and bolstered the following year with the debut of BATMAN, the Dark Knight Detective, this extraordinary world of modern mythology also includes legendary characters such as WONDER WOMAN, GREEN LANTERN, THE FLASH, AQUAMAN and the rest of THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA. With comics and graphic novels designed to appeal to a broad range of ages, the DC Universe delivers action, adventure and excitement each and every month.

Vertigo
As graphic storytelling matured and began to reach out to broader audiences, Vertigo was created in 1993 as a venue for material of an edgier, more sophisticated nature. Many of today's most provocative writers and artists, including Neil Gaiman, Brian K. Vaughn, Warren Ellis, Gilbert Hernandez, Peter Milligan, Grant Morrison, Paul Pope and Brian Azzarello, have found a creative home at Vertigo. Among the award-winning series published since the imprint's inception are SANDMAN, Y: THE LAST MAN, TRANSMETROPOLITAN, 100 BULLETS, PREACHER, FABLES and HELLBLAZER.

Wildstorm
WildStorm Productions was founded by acclaimed comic book artist Jim Lee in 1992 as part of Image Comics, an independent comics collective created by Lee and five other popular artists. WildStorm was acquired by DC Comics in 1998, strengthening both the imprint's ability to expand its editorial goals and diversifying DC's publishing portfolio. Created for super hero fans seeking something unconventional, WildStorm series such as WILDCATS, GEN13, THE AUTHORITY, PLANETARY and EX MACHINA chronicle the adventures of a different breed of super heroes and the worlds in which they live - and sometimes die.
